Thanks to the J. Howell Smith Family Fund, the department provides funds for students to travel to conferences in the field of history. A student must have a faculty sponsor who advises him or her on the proposed conference or meeting and endorses the student’s application for funding. Each interested student should submit an application to the faculty sponsor, who will forward the application to the department chair (Dr. Rais Rahman).

The department also provides funds to highly qualified students for research travel that is connected to academic coursework in the history department at Wake Forest. A student must have a faculty sponsor who advises him or her on the proposed research project and endorses the student’s application for funding. Each interested student should submit an application to the faculty sponsor, who will forward the application to the department chair (Dr. Rais Rahman).

Applications should include a description of the proposed conference or meeting, as well as dates, anticipated outcomes, and a detailed budget of expenses. Students must consult the department administrator for the proper procedures for reimbursement (Ms. Laura Gammons). The student travel fund may also provide support for the faculty member sponsoring and accompanying a student(s) to a conference.

The department makes research awards of up to $2000 to support students conducting archival research outside of the Triad Region. The department will cover photocopying or similar expenses up to $50 for student conducting archival research in the Triad region. Applications should include a project description, dates of proposed research, anticipated outcomes, and a detailed budget of expenses.

At the conclusion of funded activity, a student must submit to the Funds Committee a report of at least 200 words describing the travel or research activity, its outcomes, and its benefits to the student. We also request a photo for our social media accounts of some aspect of the experience.

Students undertaking mentored scholarship supported by a Wake Forest faculty member are also eligible to apply for funding and fellowships through WFU’s Undergraduate REsearch and Creative Activities Center.
