Phi Alpha Theta – the national honor society in the field of history – allows our students and faculty to engage intellectually and socially outside the classroom. Our chapter gives students substantial opportunities to design their own programming for the benefit of members and the department.

Events:

Our chapter annually sponsors the Department’s welcome-back picnic, along with an event for new majors, an induction ceremony for new ΦΑΘ members, and a end of year banquet.  We have also presented sessions with advice for students enrolled in a history Divisional, along with seminars on internships in public history here in Winston-Salem.  In years past, we have convened book clubs, trivia nights at Shorty’s, as well as presentations on “the secret lives of history professors” — where Wake Faculty have shared the inside scoop on their research.

Membership:

To be invited to become a member, a student must meet standards set by the national organization:

Membership in the upper 35% of the class, completion of 12 hours in history with a B average, and maintenance of a B average in at least two-thirds of the remainder of your course work.

Katy Kneisel is the president of our chapter for 2018-2019.  Professor Jake Ruddiman serves as the faculty adviser.
